Current Initiatives and Efforts

Currently, the US Fish and Wildlife service's international affairs division is trying to reduce human-elephant conflict by using awareness programs to teach the communities near elephants to safely deal with elephants and by stationing rapid response teams to help deal with human-elephant conflicts. They're also deploying teams to educate the local forest rangers and veterinarians about the elephants.(12) Despite these efforts, the number of elephant fatalities as a result of humans intentionally shooting them have continued to rise.

Other initiatives taking place are the enforcement of ivory bans, habitat preservation and restoration, and zoo breeding programs. Elephants' religious significance in Hinduism has significantly contributed to their conservation, as many religious leaders of Hinduism have spoken out about the Asian elephant’s situation, greatly increasing awareness.(13)
