Interview With an Asian Elephant

Interviewer: Hello Asian Elephant. Today, I will be asking you a few questions regarding the endangerment of your species, and your thoughts and opinions on this.

Elephant: No problem. It is my responsibility to speak on behalf of my species.

Interviewer: So, my first question for you is, what do you believe are the main reasons your species is endangered?

Elephant: Well, I’d have to say that, one of the main things would be the fact that we are losing our native habitats due to deforestation and urbanization, and our species is being separated from each other because of the development of infrastructure like roads. Being a herd species, it really becomes hard to survive and sometimes it also becomes hard to find a mate, which in the end, results in less breeding and less offspring. As well, when humans continue to kill many of my relatives, either out of fear or for our valuable tusks, it really becomes no question that the population of our species is declining and we are becoming more endangered.

Interviewer: So, now that you have told us why you believe your species is endangered, could you please give us your opinion on this and how this fact makes you feel.

Elephant: Okay. My opinion would be that, these human should really try to understand that Earth and this land is not only for them, but for other species as well. It really makes me feel both sad and frustrated at how humans just don’t seem to understand the concept of sharing. The way they build things like roads and railways, through our homes or transform our homes into farms, it’s like we don’t even exist. The things they do just don’t make any sense at all, and at the end of the day, it’s us who get affected and dye because of the actions of humans.

Interviewer: Thank you for your answer. Now, could you please tell us what you believe would happen, if Asian Elephants become extinct and how this would affect the ecosystem.

Elephant: So, since the Bengal Tigers are our predators, I believe that their population would slightly decrease soon after our extinction, however, it will definitely re–balance itself quickly as the tigers have many other sources of food. However, the main impact of our extinction would be directly on the plant and tree species in our ecosystem. This is because our waste helps disperse and spread the seeds of plants and also fertilizes soil. This means that if we go extinct, every other species will be indirectly affected because plants are the producers and are at the bottom of the food chain and middle of the food web, so most species will have less food.

Interviewer: That was very well said, and I now understand how important Asian Elephants actually are. It has come time to wrap up our interview. It was a pleasure speaking with you, Asian Elephant. Now, before we end the interview you have any final remarks.

Elephant: All I have to say, is that I kindly request humans to please stop what they are doing now, because if they continue to do this, in a couple of years we may even be extinct. But, this can be stopped and we can be saved, but it is the responsibility of humans to help save our species, because our lives are in their hands.

Thank you.
