Forecast of the Species Population

From 1900-1910, there were around 200,000 Asian elephants. From there it steeply dropped, lowering to 25,000-42,000 by the late 1970’s. The most recent estimate, in 2014, placed the Asian elephant population at 35,000-40,000.(1) Population estimates have fluctuated over the years, but there is a general trend: the elephant population has stabilized. It will most likely continue to maintain stable for the next few years, but what happens next cannot be forecasted. If humans continue to destroy the Asian elephant’s population from deforestation and urbanization, the population will once again plummet. Currently, there isn’t enough space to sustain its pre-20th century population.
